Programmer Analyst
Description
This position develops applications and databases for the Collections and Discovery department of USF Libraries Tampa.
This position will also be responsible for coordinating web applications and services. The ideal candidate will have
advanced knowledge of programming and the ability to design and implement custom applications for various
collections, discovery, metadata and linked data projects. This person will also administer and design multiple
Library data management systems and their user interfaces.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collections and Discovery Projects: Works with the Metadata Team to develop programs and applications to
increase the efficiency of metadata workflows. Develops programs to assist the Metadata Team in data
analysis and metadata standardization. Consults with Collections and Discovery team members to design
programmatic solutions for various technical issues. Explores new and emerging tools, technologies, and
methodologies to automate and streamline workflows and website/software development.
Database Administration: Designs and administers relational databases for Collections and Discovery,
including EB+ SQL database and ebook ERM database. Automates and runs the data loading processes for
databases. Creates and manages the Collections and Discovery cloud-based web servers. Develops web
interfaces and constructs database queries for web searching and display. Provides data preservation and
archiving for Collections and Discovery databases. Explores ways to enhance and improve the databases.
Linked Data Projects: Develops programs and scripts to support the linked open data projects. Investigates
methods to design and administer an RDF TripleStore database. Explores opportunities for developing a
semantic web display for linked data. Acquires skills to write SPARQL queries for searching the TripleStore
database.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training and two
years of IT related work experience; or a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and three years of
IT related work experience, OR a Master's degree and one year of IT related work experience, OR a
combination of six years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT
certification is considered to be related training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience designing, developing and implementing computer programs using JAVA, C#, Python, etc.
Proficiency with Relational Database design and administration. Ability to construct database queries (PHP,
SQL). Familiarity with contemporary web standards (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript). Experience with web server
management and cloud-based tools including Apache SOLR, Amazon Web Services etc. Basic
understanding of cataloging and MARC record format. Familiar with or initiative to learn the emerging
applications of linked data and semantic web concepts (such as BIBFRAME, RDF, SPARQL, JSON-LD,
TripleStore). Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills. Ability to work
independently to plan, implement, and execute projects autonomously.
