About the Position:

The Library invites applications from qualified candidates for a 17-month appointment in Web and Digital Collections Librarian at the rank of Librarian I beginning June 1, 2019.

About the Academic Unit:

The MacOdrum Library promotes excellence at Carleton University by collecting, preserving, and providing access to information resources and services for our teaching, learning, research, and administrative communities, wherever they are located.

The Library consists of a main building at the heart of the campus which holds over 3.7 million items and an on-campus storage facility with a capacity of 800,000 volumes. There are 137 FTE positions in the Library including about 25 librarians, 75 support staff, 3 senior management librarians, and about 75 part-time student positions. The Library participates in co-operative ventures with area libraries and museums as well as libraries in research institutions across Canada. It is also part of the Ontario Consortium of University Libraries and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited school is required. Formal coursework and/or in-depth experience in web design, and/or digital collections management preferred.

Under the direction of the Head of Library Technology Services, the Web and Digital Collections Librarian is responsible for the ongoing operation, support, and maintenance of the Library’s web sites and digital collections. This position works in close collaboration with Library colleagues and campus partners to ensure that these library services continue to meet evolving needs of the Library and its users. The incumbent chairs the Library Web Committee and is a member of the Digital Initiatives Committee.

They must also have:

• Working knowledge and experience of web design, usability and accessibility standards.
• Knowledge and experience with web content management systems.
• Experience creating and maintaining digital collections.
• Working knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices.
• Working knowledge of metadata, linked data, and interoperability standards, including Dublin Core, MODS, MARC, and RDF.
• Interest and ability in the areas of web technologies, standards, interface design, and user testing relevant to academic libraries.
• Interest and ability to develop and apply strategies, best practices, standards, and technologies to support discovery, access, and preservation of digital collections.
• A proven service orientation; demonstrated willingness to collaborate and share expertise, ability to work in teams and negotiate solutions.
• Ability to convey complex technical and process information to participants at varying levels of expertise.
• Working knowledge of the approaches and techniques used by students and faculty to search for and access library resources to support their learning, teaching, and research.
