Data Science Specialization

Purdue University Libraries seek an Assistant or Associate Professor with a specialization in data science to join the Libraries faculty.  The Libraries are recognized leaders in research in data management and curation, information literacy, and scholarly communication, and we are developing a curriculum to address data literacy and undergraduate research.  The qualified candidate will join a collaborative team of faculty and information professionals, and participate in developing and teaching courses related to data literacy. 

Responsibilities:  Participate in Purdue University’s Integrated Data Sciences Initiative (IDSI) https://www.purdue.edu/data-science/. Develop and teach courses, as well as workshops and other programming, to support data science and data literacy. Define and conduct ongoing assessment for data literacy for various groups (undergraduate/graduate students, faculty, and others). Develop, implement and promote data sciences resources and tools, including the Purdue University Research Repository. Establish collaborative relationships with other faculty and research centers. Provide consultations in developing data management plans and curation strategies. Make recommendations for developing the Libraries collections in data science related areas.

Required qualifications: Ph.D. in information science, informatics or related area, or in relevant discipline building significant knowledge and skills in data sciences. Background working with qualitative and quantitative data.  Experience with at least one programming language (Python and/or R preferred), to support coding and data manipulation.  Knowledge of research data management and curation practices.  Commitment to and excellence in teaching, familiarity with trends in instructional best practices.  Strong interest in and ability to mentor students. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. Commitment to research and scholarship, and potential to achieve promotion and tenure.

Desired qualifications:  Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school. Background in computing in social science or health data. Experience teaching tools for data collection, annotation, analysis or visualization. Background working with scientific repositories or digital libraries/infrastructure. Experience teaching using active learning methods.  Collaboration with digital archives, GIS or humanities computing projects.

Salary and benefits:

Salary commensurate with experience in the context of Purdue University’s salary structure.

Faculty tenure-track position with a twelve-month appointment. Rank of assistant or associate professor.  Start-up funds in support of research are provided for computer/software/equipment, for travel/professional development, and for a half time graduate assistant for two years.

Purdue provides a generous fringe benefit package that includes retirement benefits as well as health, disability and life insurance, 22 annual vacation days, and tuition support for employee, children, and spouse/same sex domestic partner.  Purdue University is responsive to the needs of dual career couples. 

Relocation funding will be available and discussed on a case-by-case basis.
