The Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a collaborative, proactive, enthusiastic, and service-oriented candidate for the position of Pharmacy Librarian. This Librarian will be the primary provider of library support for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The School was rated as the number one Pharmacy program in the latest rankings of the nation’s Doctor of Pharmacy programs by U.S. News & World Report (https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-health-schools/pharmacy-rankings).  The successful candidate will also provide information and education services using a variety of methods and technologies, participate in systematic review services, and contribute to other services and new initiatives with librarians and staff from across the libraries. The Librarian works in client settings and in the library, and is part of a team of librarians, support staff, and library partners working to achieve the library’s mission to manage information and knowledge to advance health and health care.

Library and Department Overview
The Health Sciences Library has partnered with the School of Pharmacy around a variety of instructional and research-based projects. Liaisons have developed and provided course-integrated instruction for the PharmD program, including participation in an on-site and virtual Evidence-Based Practice course which involves teaching about literature searching, finding and evaluating evidence, establishing pre-class readings and quizzes, providing hands-on instruction, and facilitating group work assignments.  With respect to research engagement, in addition to assisting with systematic reviews, librarians have participated in research metrics and visualization projects where they have worked with faculty to help identify and visualize areas of research collaboration and topics of inquiry that could help inform curricular needs and identify points of synergy and growth.  Potential growth areas for the library’s partnership with the School of Pharmacy include informatics, data analytics, and interprofessional education and practice (IPEP).

The Clinical, Academic, and Research Engagement (CARE) department at the UNC Chapel Hill Health Sciences Library works with other library departments to meet the needs of the five health professional schools and UNC Medical Center hospitals. This department includes liaison librarians for clinical departments in the UNC Medical Center; liaison librarians for the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and the Department of Allied Health Sciences in the School of Medicine; the Bioinformatics and Research Data Librarian; and graduate student research assistants.

CARE provides course- and curriculum-integrated instruction; curriculum-planning support; educational programs and workshops; and expert searching. The department collaborates with clients in a wide range of information-seeking, data and knowledge management, scholarly communications, and research activities.

This position reports to the Head of CARE and works with members of the CARE team and other Health Sciences Library departments to support students and faculty seamlessly to respond to needs that arise from their academic work and clinical practice.

Responsibilities

  • Stays current with pharmacy education trends, curricular structures, and pedagogical methods, including developments in interprofessional education and practice (IPEP) and student research.
  • Collaborates with faculty to design and provide curriculum-integrated instruction, working with all levels of pharmacy education, on- and off-campus and at regional campuses. Identifies and shares models of instruction and application that can be used to develop students’ information competencies and critical appraisal skills.
  • Participates in new program planning, accreditation processes, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Connects the school with the libraries’ specialized services, such as impact measurement and visualization and digital health research.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, planning retreats, faculty development sessions, key student group meetings, and research presentations. Identifies opportunities to present at meetings when appropriate.
  • Provides in-depth consultations, expert literature searches, and current awareness services for teaching, clinical care, research, and administrative purposes for Health Sciences Library clients.
  • Understands the role evidence-based practice (EBP) plays in supporting healthcare decision-making and promotes the use of EBP tools in various settings.
  • Develops library tutorials, resource guides, and other instructional aids.
  • Supports constituents’ publication and research dissemination efforts, including compliance with NIH and other agency public access requirements, establishing grant opportunity alerts, and assisting with the integration of ORCiD to enhance scholarly efforts.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational and professional environment and demonstration of the ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Pursues professional development, professional service activities, and publication as guided by the standards of the library’s Committee on Appointments and Promotions.
  • Represents the Library in University-wide activities and in other venues, participates in other Library activities in support of the University Libraries’ mission and to serve the university community as needed.

Qualifications

REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information science or related advanced degree
  • Experience conducting expert level literature searching in health, physical or natural sciences, and/or education related subject areas
  • Experience teaching in innovative and collaborative ways using emerging technologies and evidence-based instructional methods
  • Evidence of project, priority, and time management skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility; awareness and understanding of diverse thought, cultures, race, religion, gender, and other differences

PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Two years’ relevant work experience
  • Experience or evidence of potential to conduct educational assessment and evaluation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of drug information resources
  • Evidence of participation in research teams as a peer, e.g., co-authoring or co-presenting research findings; conducting systematic reviews; developing practice guidelines or consensus statements; synthesizing evidence; partnering on grant proposals; or cultivating partnerships for library integration within the research enterprise
  • Familiarity with clinical teaching, clinical care, and evidence-based practice (EBP) resources
  • Knowledge of professional education competency requirements and scholarly communication practices in pharmacy
  • Experience with curricular redesign or co-teaching to create interprofessional education and practice (IPEP) opportunities for students

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
