Systems and Digital Scholarship Librarian

Description

Reporting to the Head of Collection Development, Exhibitions, and Engagement, the Systems and Digital Scholarship Librarian (SDSL) is the primary technical lead on the Pitts Theology Library staff. The SDSL is responsible for developing and maintaining library software systems, which currently include the OpenRoom room booking tool, the library entrance web application, the Digital Image Archive (http://pitts.emory.edu/dia), digital signage, the library website, and digital companions to the library’s exhibitions program including the exhibitions website (http://exhibitions.pitts.emory.edu). The SDSL also coordinates library assessment at Pitts, including the gathering, visualizing, and reporting of library use data. The SDSL serves as the primary liaison with counterparts at other Emory libraries and at Emory Library and Information Technology Services (LITS), with regard to shared software systems, such as the library services platform (ExLibris’s Alma). The SDSL serves as the coordinator of all digital projects born at the library, in coordination with other relevant units at the University, notably the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship. The SDSL will work with faculty at Candler School of Theology and Emory University to advance digital scholarship in theology and religion. The SDSL will also serve as part of the library’s reference team and provide reference services, serving as the coordinator of all instruction in digital humanities work in theology for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. This coordination may include teaching workshops and courses in the School of Theology and maintaining a research agenda on the impact of digital tools on library collections and academic research.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participates in professional and scholarly associations relevant to software development and digital engagement in an academic library
• Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge on trends and developments in the digital humanities and scholarly communications
• Maintains a publication record focused on digital humanities and the impact of technology on academic libraries
• Participates in library and campus committees as appropriate for service purposes

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in theology, religious studies, or related field
• 2+ years of relevant experience in an academic library or similar environment
• Experience developing software for academic purposes, particularly with tools such as Python, Ruby/Rails, HTML/CSS, web service APIs, SQL databases
• Experience with design and brand strategy, particularly in the web environment
• Strong writing and organizational skills
• Knowledge and experience with library software systems, particularly library service platforms and discovery layers
• Understanding of current research practices in theology or religious studies
• Strong interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to patron service
• Interest in teaching digital methods and tools to students and faculty

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• PhD (or equivalent) in theology, religious studies, or related field
• Demonstrated project management skills on technical projects in an academic context
• Experience with digital scholarship methods, such as text mining tools and topic modeling
• Knowledge of and experience with digitization and metadata best practices
• Demonstrated experience with ExLibris’s Alma
• Demonstrated excellence teaching in higher education and working with University faculty
• Experience conducting advanced research in theology or religious studies
• Academic publication record focused on digital humanities
