Preservation Engineer

Small Data Industries is a consultancy shaping what it means to collect and preserve artwork that employs technology as a medium. Our interdisciplinary and collaborative team utilizes cutting edge conservation techniques and practices to protect and preserve artwork of the 20th and 21st centuries, including film, video, sound, electronics and software. If you are passionate about art and technology, and curious about conservation, you’ll fit right in.
We seek a candidate who can advise institutional clients on critical digital infrastructure, create user-facing software solutions that solve complex problems, tinker with microcontrollers, and help collaborators understand the intricate nuances of the technologies employed by an artist in an artwork. As well, you will have the opportunity to contribute to research and development efforts in early stage projects involving decentralized storage and bit preservation.
Must have qualities: a collaborative spirit, love of art, an interest in preservation, superior communication skills, an ability to explain complex topics, persistent curiosity
Good to have qualities: experience deploying, configuring, and contributing to complex back-end infrastructure, an interest in reverse engineering, familiarity with physical computing, PCB design, soldering, knowledge of art history - especially time-based media art, familiarity with ethereum, familiarity with decentralized storage
