The Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Libraries invite applications and nominations for two Associate Deans to join their faculty and senior leadership team. The Associate Dean for Innovation, Preservation, and Access and the Associate Dean of Research and Academic Services will come to the CMU Libraries at an exciting time, as the Libraries grow to keep pace with the University’s current enrollment growth and as they develop new ways of engaging and partnering with their academic community.

Carnegie Mellon University is one of the world’s most dynamic and innovative institutions of higher education and stands among an elite group of top-tier international universities. In its over 100 year history, the institution has evolved from a small technical school to a leading global research university known for its preeminence in technology, business, humanities, and the arts. Recognized for its exceptional academic programs, collaboration across disciplines, and innovative leadership in education and research, CMU is ranked No. 24 in the world and  No. 17 among U.S. universities in 2018, according to the Times Higher Education of London.

The Associate Dean (AD) for Innovation, Preservation, and Access (IPA) will be an innovative leader who develops a vision and charts a course for this new division, made up of the departments whose content is unique to Carnegie Mellon: Scholarly Communications and Publishing, Data Management, Digital Scholarship, Digital Humanities, Digitization, and Archives & Unique Collections. The AD will help develop a strong leadership team within the CMU Libraries, determine the degree of integration necessary in this portfolio, provide leadership that unites, supports, and empowers library faculty and staff to deliver excellent service, build relationships across campus, and value and advance diversity and inclusion efforts within the Libraries. In so far as one can, this person will be attuned to the future of libraries and new trends in services and technologies.

The Associate Dean (AD) of Research and Academic Services (RAS) will be a talented, dynamic, and innovative leader who oversees and provides strategic direction for library liaisons/information specialists and services. The new AD will help develop a strong leadership team within the CMU Libraries, oversee and provide strategic direction for Research and Academic Services, provide leadership that unites, supports, and empowers library faculty and staff to deliver excellent service, develop and maintain innovative, effective programming, develop partnerships and networks across campus, and value and advance diversity and inclusion efforts.

Both positions will be well supported by leadership, who recognize the important role the libraries can play on campus. The Libraries benefit from faculty experts across a number of fields related to information access and dissemination and a community actively engaged in these topics. The Associate Deans will capitalize on this momentum and share CMU’s core values of dedication, innovation, and collaboration, supporting a campus climate renowned for an intensive and engaged approach to human development, problem solving, and real world impact.
