Overview

The ILS Office is responsible for the day to day monitoring, maintenance and ongoing development of the Library’s integrated library systems platform, Sierra, which includes supporting staff system-wide with Circulation, Cataloging, Acquisitions, Serials, Electronic Resources operations, and web discovery (Encore/ Classic Catalog) platforms.

The Library Systems Analyst is responsible for and participates in the development and implementation, as well as the ongoing support and administration of the NYPL Sierra ILS.  The Library Systems Administrator collaborates with departments throughout NYPL such as Circulation, Acquisitions, Serials, Cataloging, ERM, and Customer Experience as well as within NYPL Digital, to identify and coordinate resolution of server and application-level issues in support of Library services.

Principal Responsibilities

Under the direction of the manager of the ILS system:

  • Controls all levels of access to the various system servers
  • Monitors and tracks the health of all the servers in the ILS environment
  • Manages system and application-level settings (e.g., logins, login workflows, loan rules, circulation parameters, Acquisitions vendor ftp)
  • Troubleshoots ILS system and applications-level issues
  • Administers access to the Postgres database portion of the ILS
  • Runs large scale ad hoc statistical reports and generates record updates involving hundreds of thousands or millions of records; runs regular data exports for Hathi-Trust, Collection HQ, Google
  • Administers third party integration with internal library partners and vendors such as Lyngsoe, 3M, HOV, OverDrive, Baker & Taylor. Lynda.com, etc.
  • Administers Sierra client connections and troubleshoots issues; Provides Desktop Engineering guidance when a new PC image is being created that includes Sierra
  • Administers Classic Catalog and Encore using webmaster and web options admin modes and also supports efforts of various digital experience groups
  • Sets up and manages Sierra auto notice jobs
  • Maintains telephone renewal and notification systems
  • Tests various aspects of the Sierra application after software upgrades
  • Trains staff in the use of all ILS module functions, including Circulation, Cataloging, Acquisitions, Serials, ERM, WebPAC & Encore administration

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and familiarity with Integrated Library Systems or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of ILS applications, (Postgres)SQL, Windows, PC hardware and MS Office
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to manage multiple urgent tasks in a highly demanding environment
  • Very strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with external and internal stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills and capacity to understand and interpret information received from system users

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive practical knowledge of the Innovative Sierra ILS environment
  • Extensive practical knowledge of the Encore and WebPAC ILS discovery products
  • Strong history working with Unix, Windows, PC hardware and command line interfaces (especially manipulating large data sets), and basic knowledge of PostgreSQL
  • Basic knowledge of HTML as it relates to Encore/ WebPAC settings
  • Knowledge of MARC standards
  • Well versed in networking and Internet Protocols and security as they relate to the ILS
  • Knowledge of Library functional, policy areas and technology resources pertinent to Library operations

Work Environment

  • Most work is performed in a standard office setting
  • Occasional site meetings at branches and research centers

Physical Duties

  • Travel throughout the five boroughs of NYC as required

Hours

35 hours per week
Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm
Evenings and weekends as required
Schedule subject to change
