Digital Repositories Librarian

The University of Waterloo Library seeks a creative and collegial librarian for the position of Digital Repositories Librarian. Reporting to the Head, Digital Initiatives and working with colleagues across the library and campus, the incumbent will develop, coordinate, deliver, monitor, assess, and advance the use of the Library's digital collections, the institutional repository and open access publishing services. The successful candidate will have a vision for the future of scholarly communication services in libraries.

The University of Waterloo Library is a member of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL). The Library is a member of the Tri-University Group (TUG), along with member libraries at the University of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier University, serving a combined student population of over 76,000, combined holdings exceeding 5 million, and combined budgets exceeding $45 million. The Tri-University Group manages shared technology and a remote storage facility, and enables collaborative projects across the three library systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Leading and promoting the library’s digital repository and open access publishing services (UWSpace, Waterloo Digital Library, Open Journal Systems instances)
• Leading digital repository and open access publishing projects including guidance on digital lifecycle management
• Serving as a resource to library staff and the university community on digital repositories and scholarly communications services
• Working with the Open Access Working Group to provide leadership, expertise and support relating to open access
• Implementing policies on digital preservation, digitization, and metadata standards
• Developing methods to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of repository and open access publishing services
• Coaching, training and mentoring MLIS co-op students and library associates
• Participating as a member of the Digital Initiatives team to ensure essential system functionality during times of vacation or illness

Qualifications:

• ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree, or equivalent
• Experience with digital repositories and content management systems (e.g. Islandora, Drupal, Fedora Commons, DSpace, Dataverse)
• Project management experience with complex digital initiatives involving many stakeholders
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently without direct supervision
• Demonstrated ability to independently, as well as collaboratively, plan, coordinate, and implement effective digital projects, including managing multiple and simultaneous projects
• Knowledge of digital library, scholarly communications and research data management trends in academic libraries
• Demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices
• A strong commitment to high quality service
• Proficiency with well-formed XML; strong, demonstrated facility with standards-based non-MARC metadata (e.g. Dublin Core); demonstrated ability to investigate and learn new metadata standards as required
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on projects across a wide range of departments and for varying audiences
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written

Assets:

• Familiarity with Open Access digital scholarship publishing platforms (e.g. Open Journal Systems)
• Intermediate programming and/or system administrator skills; experience working with programmers (e.g., writing spec and use cases)

Compensation

The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications within the USG 8-13 salary level, corresponding to the ranks of librarian I through VI.
