The Bodleian Digital Library Systems and Services (BDLSS) at the Bodleian Libraries provide digital services for the students, researchers and staff of the University of Oxford.

We are now seeking a talented XML-focused Software Engineer to work on a varied portfolio of projects led by BDLSS. Based in the BDLSS Digital Research team, you will work with a team of developers, project managers, and archivists on a number of key projects to enhance access and discoverability for the Bodleian's world-class special collections. You will initially focus on developing and implementing new technical solutions for post-medieval archival materials and will participate in the scoping and planning of future work in this area.

Your role will include developing and helping maintain the Bodleian’s growing collections of archives and manuscripts metadata, especially its XML-based catalogues, migrating XML-based catalogue records into new tools and contributing to establishing cataloguing workflows. You will also participate in related user and development communities and in training staff and act as a resource for technical questions and forward planning.

You will also have the opportunity to contribute to a variety of future initiatives, including projects focused on metadata management and consolidation, Linked Open Data, and innovative approaches to search and discovery of digital resources.

You will have a degree in a relevant technical field, or equivalent experience with structured text processing. You will also have a strong background in XML technologies, a collaborative approach to technical development, and an interest in and commitment to making the Bodleian's collections more widely available to students, researchers and the general public. A background in Digital Humanities or experience in working with EAD and TEI metadata environments is desirable.

Owing to the nature of this post, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a Disclosure Scotland check as well as a financial background check. The possession of a criminal record or poor financial background will not necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are judged individually according to the nature of the role and information provided.

This post is part of a pilot scheme testing a new Supporting Evidence Form in place of the more usual ‘supporting statement’. You MUST submit a completed Supporting Evidence Form and a copy of your CV in order for your application to be processed. Please ensure that you carefully read the How to Apply section provided in the Job Description, which you can download below along with the required Supporting Evidence Form.

Only applications received online by 12.00 midday on Friday 8 September 2017 can be considered (original closing date 1 September 2017). Interviews are expected to take place in week commencing 18 September 2017.
