Senior User Experience Design and Development Engineer

The Senior User Experience (UX) Design and Development Engineer joins other highly talented information technology staff as a leader in contributing to the Library's goal of being a central and responsive partner in the research, teaching, and learning priorities of the University of Virginia. This position performs design and front-end development work on large-scale and complex web and software projects, contributing expertise in user interaction design, visual design, and web accessibility. The Senior UX Design and Development Engineer applies innovative approaches to conceiving and delivering impactful and pleasant user experiences across the Library's web environment that maintain the Library's brand standards. This position plays an important role in ensuring the short- and long-term stability, usability, and accessibility of UVA Library's web presences and software products while meeting or exceeding user expectations based on research studies and data. In addition, the position works collaboratively with content owners, other web developers and designers, systems administrators, and user researchers to define and test requirements and implement solutions. In collaboration with management, the person in this position determines the overall technical approach to assigned projects.

Qualifications,

Required:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline or demonstrated direct experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Demonstrated application of digital accessibility standards, front end software design and development experience. Ability to develop high level and/or detailed storyboards, user flows, mockups and prototypes to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas. Strong working knowledge of design and prototype software. Experience creating design guidelines and systems to elevate a brand while maintaining consistency. Ability to conceptualize a problem and develop technology requirements. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with a wide audience. Ability to work collaboratively and productively in teams. Ability to build mobile-first websites with HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Knowledge of web production software and content management systems such as Drupal. Knowledge of major operating systems and browsers, as well as automated testing platforms such as Sauce Labs. Willingness to explore new and open-source web technologies. Knowledge of accessibility standards including WCAG 2.0 and ADA Section 508 compliance. Design and prototyping software such as Sketch, InVision, Photoshop, Framer, Zeplin, and UserTesting.com. GitHub

Preferred:

Master's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Library Science or related discipline. Considerable experience developing user interfaces for managing digital assets for a research library or national archive. Knowledge of Library and Archives community driven open source technologies. Knowledge of open source indexing technologies. Knowledge of open source repository technologies. Knowledge of object oriented design. Knowledge of digital object formats. Knowledge of library metadata standards. Ability to teach and work with different levels of web skills of Library staff. Ability to collaborate with Library staff and IT staff across the University. Team leadership skills. Experience working with Waterfall and Agile methodologies. Hydra, SOLR, Fedora, Blacklight, Rubymine, etc. JIRA, Confluence, Service Desk.
