OLE (the Open Library Environment, of which Cornell University Library is a member) has partnered with EBSCO and Index Data to build and implement FOLIO, a new open source library services platform. OLE is seeking a talented, experienced designer who can drive design processes from research through concept development and iterations to actually creating usable mockups and interfaces.  The right candidate will have the following mix of knowledge and skills: information architecture, wireframing, visual design, interaction design and prototyping (both on paper and digitally).

 

This position is administered by Cornell University, an OLE partner institution; however, the Index Data and OLE teams are distributed internationally so there is flexibility in location and work hours. You may be able to work from home!

 

This a two-year benefits-eligible appointment starting immediately.

 

Responsibilities:

 

The UX/UI/IxD Designer plays a critical role in the FOLIO “design-first” development process that puts the user experience ahead of the functional specification to ensure that requirements are well understood and ergonomic. The Designer meets with functional experts (SMEs) to gain understanding and insight for desired functionality and performance of software, to build rapport with the SMEs, and to provide guidance and understanding of design and architectural issues for the SMEs. The Designer also works with Product Owners and Development Leads to translate design specifications into tasks for developers consistent with project goals.


The ideal candidate is able to:

  • Turn complex problems into simple and engaging user experiences
  • Create wireframes, workflows, storyboards and user journeys seamlessly
  • Communicate and recommend design choices, advocating for the end user
  • Collaborate with product owners and developers to understand objectives and constraints
  • Do research and translate these findings into insights and design improvements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 5-7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination
  • Portfolio showcasing user-centered design solutions
  • Advanced knowledge of user-centered design methodologies and practices
  • Strong understanding of User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) principles
  • Expert level skill developing wireframes and prototypes
  • Fluent in relevant software such as Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Ability to translate user requirements into effective solutions
  • Open to constructive critique and the willing to learn from peers
  • Evidence of team-based collaboration experience and a strong service orientation

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiar with HTML, Javascript, CSS and JSON
  • Experience with Proto.io
  • Experience conducting usability testing
  • Proficiency developing web interfaces for all major browsers and in-depth knowledge of their behaviors and rendering challenges
  • Proficiency implementing responsive (mobile-first) designs
  • Proficiency developing accessible web applications in accordance with current regulations and standards
  • Experience using tools such as JIRA for issue tracking
  • Experience in Agile software development methodology
