for a developer.

*DARIAH, the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities,
seeks a research associate/developer (preferable PHP) based in Berlin.*
We are looking to complement our existing team of 6 researchers with an
experienced and motivated research associate/developer responsible for our
work on the Humanities at Scale project. This position will be situated at
the DARIAH Coordination Office (DCO) in Berlin, hosted by the Centre Marc
Bloch (CMB), Friedrichstrasse 191, 10117 Berlin. In exceptional
circumstances, we accept remote work.
*The ideal candidate:*
• has a Masters degree or higher
• should be interested in an area of applied computing or information
science (e.g. digital libraries, metadata, semantic web, information
retrieval), and has software development skills (preferable in PHP) and a
knowledge of a range of computing technologies of relevance to preservation
systems, e.g. XML, databases, web services.
• demonstrates strong understanding of user interface design, browser
compatibility, accessibility/usability standards, industry best practices
and conventions
• has excellent communication and organizational skills with a proven
ability to work with a wide range of internal and external contacts and
stakeholders
• has the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
• is fluent in English (spoken & written), German and French would be an
asset

*Who we are*
DARIAH (http://dariah.eu/), the Digital Research Infrastructure for the
Arts and Humanities, is a pan-European Research Infrastructure, which aims
to enhance and support digitally-enabled research and teaching across the
humanities and arts.
On 15 August 2014, DARIAH was established as a European legal entity, the
DARIAH-ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium). The
DARIAH-ERIC has 17 member countries. The DARIAH-EU Coordination Office is
responsible for coordinating the day-to-day activities of DARIAH-EU. The
DARIAH-EU Coordination Office is a distributed team with offices in
Germany, France and The Netherlands. The key tasks of the DCO are to:
• provide high quality support to the DARIAH-EU Members, Observers and
Cooperating Partners
• ensure the efficient and effective operation of the DARIAH-ERIC
• provide high quality communication within DARIAH-EU and to the wider
digital arts and humanities research community in Europe and beyond
*Context “Humanities at Scale”*
(http://dariah.eu/about/humanities-at-scale.html) is a Horizon 2020 funded
project under the call for proposal INFRADEV-3-2015, Individual
Implementation and Operation of ESFRI projects. It aims the support of
basic services of DARIAH. The aim of the project is to address limitations
of the current model of sharing knowledge in DARIAH and of connecting the
national activities in digital arts and humanities initiatives in Europe.
It focuses on delivering a stronger core for DARIAH’s operations as well as
on providing more resources for all communities within DARIAH. This project
will add essential services to DARIAH by enhancing its user community and
with a wide range of innovation and training activities. The duration of
the project is from September 2015 – December 2017. Role: The post will
require a combination of theoretical work, design and implementation of
proof-of-concept tools and other software components and evaluation.
• The candidate will have (co-)responsibility for software development
within the Humanities at Scale project and in particular for open data and
information design. He/she will work in large-scale European team with
other researchers and developers
• he/she will gather and document business requirements by meeting with
project members as well as other stakeholders
• he/she will possess design experience and functional knowledge of the
utilization of various web services standards (e.g. REST); design patterns
(e.g. MVC), design methodologies (e.g. Agile\Scrum, etc.)
*Principal duties*
• Support the development of environments for open data and shareable
methods for data-driven research
• Execute distributed data and metadata design to share data and
information across distributed sites
• Take requirements and develop the technical design for assigned work as
well as ensure proper usage
• Follow the established processes, policies, standards and procedures
• Conduct appropriate reviews on work as necessary. Present findings and
offer solutions
*Terms and conditions*
You will be appointed until the end of the project (December 2017), with an
option for extension, on salary similar to that expected in university or
research institution. The actual salary will be dependent on qualifications
and experience, but is expected to be in the range of 34,000€ - 48,000€ per
year for a full-time position. The appointment is expected to be effective
from February 2017.
