The Department of University Libraries at Ball State University is accepting applications for a dynamic, resourceful professional as Head of Metadata and Copy Cataloging.

The primary function of this position will be to provide leadership in developing, maintaining, and assessing personnel and workflow for copy cataloging of materials in digital, print, and multimedia formats to optimize user resource discovery; provide original cataloging according to accepted library standards and practices; create authority records; participate in the enrichment and maintenance of the University Libraries’ online catalog and digital collections.

Major responsibilities:  Provide management, training, monitoring, and assessment of personnel and workflow for copy cataloging of materials in digital, print, and multimedia (DVDs, realia, etc.) formats; ensure quality and adherence to established library standards and practices.  Catalog educational and informational resources in digital, multimedia, and print formats using international cataloging codes, metadata formats for bibliographic description, LC-PCC Policy Statements, controlled vocabularies for assigning subjects, and LC or other classification systems as specified by local practice.  Create, update, and maintain authority records for Libraries’ online authority file; perform database enrichment and maintenance functions, as required.

Minimum qualifications:   MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program; one or more years of cataloging experience using MARC formats, AACR2rev or RDA, Library of Congress subject headings and classification, a bibliographic utility such as OCLC, and an automated library system; Effective oral and written communication skills; working knowledge of basic Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred qualifications:  Additional advanced degrees; Supervisory experience; multimedia cataloging experience in an academic library; knowledge of emerging technologies, especially metadata systems and related standards; ability to work with a variety of foreign languages, including those using non-Roman scripts.
