Description

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Director of Systemwide
Digital Library Services who is responsible for the entire life cycle of each system and project – with a
particular focus on open source systems  – from requirements gathering to deployment and
maintenance.  As the leader of a team actively engaged in applied research and development, the
Director provides technology and design leadership, management of systemwide projects
with 23 campus libraries, supervises staff, and oversees the work of external partners in the
development of new systems and services.

Duties:
Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Academic Technology Services, the incumbent will:
coordinate project teams comprised of Academic Technology Services  project leads and campus
liaisons for the ATS projects as assigned. In close collaboration with the CSU libraries and
Chancellor’s Office leadership, the Director will: (1) develop and communicate a shared vision and
strategic plan  for new and improved systemwide digital library services, (2) provide overall planning
and management of systemwide library services, including supervising SDLS staff and consultants in the development and maintenance of systemwide applications, and managing the work of 23 campus Library IT staff in the implementation and support of those systems, (3) research, design, and develop innovative digital library applications, tools, and services, with a focus on Xerxes, an internationally used open source discovery system developed by SDLS in collaboration with several institutional development partners, (4) work with campus and Chancellor’s Office academic technology groups to integrate systemwide digital library services into learning management systems, campus portals, and other academic technology platforms, (5) cultivate development partners from external institutions and manage their contributions to opensource systems and tools developed by SDLS, and (6) in consultation with the campus libraries, evaluate and select commercial library systems to support systemwide services.

Requirements:
This position requires a Master of Library and Information Science.    Work experience requirements include: (1)  8+ years of experience working in academic libraries including management experience in designing and delivering digital library services within a consortium or large university system and integrating digital  library services into learning management systems and other academic technology platforms, (2) 8+ years of experience in object-oriented programming, use of relational databases and indexing technologies, web application development tools and frameworks, user-centered interface design experience, and experience leading open-source software projects, (3) 8+ years of experience working with library systems and applications, including discovery and delivery systems, library management systems, digital preservation systems, and libray metadata schemas, protocols, and standards.
