POSITION SUMMARY:
The River Campus Libraries seek a web applications programmer to join the Information Discovery Team, the unit charged with developing the tools and interfaces to expose our rich content and academic resources to the UR community and the world. This position will be responsible for various web development projects that serve the evolving needs of the faculty and students of the University. The primary responsibility is to develop cutting-edge websites and digital projects, in close collaboration with the rest of the team. The position reports to the Director of the Information Discovery Team.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

25% Web Application Programming and Development
  • Collaborates with stakeholders across the River Campus Libraries to find opportunities to build upon and improve RCL’s various web platforms and tools
  • Develops robust and user-friendly library tools using a variety of programming languages, for both external and internal stakeholders, working closely with the Interface Designer
  • Creates code to integrate web services with various commercial library products, including search and retrieval, metadata harvesting, and discovery
  • Develops programmatic solutions to reduce time investments and errors in manual workflows

25% Code Implementation and Testing
  • Participates in the design of software platform architectures and databases when appropriate and in collaboration with the Information Discovery Team
  • Tests and improves web applications based on expert analysis, user requirements, designs, and professional judgment
  • Develops testing protocols to ensure successful software releases
  • Works closely with members of the Information Discovery Team and other library stakeholders to understand project requirements and develop the best solution possible
25% Troubleshooting and Support
  • Receive and manage support requests
  • Troubleshoot, plan, and resolve problems in a highly collaborative environment
  • Provides consultation support on systems and programs
15% Project Planning and Documentation
  • Produces well designed, documented, and tested code
  • Deploys and maintains the code base for completed applications
10% Professional Development and Service
  • Collaborates and communicate with various RCL stakeholders
  • Keeps abreast of trends as they relate to academic library website services, electronic resource management, digital library networks, metadata schemas, database technology or other relevant areas by self-study, attending job related seminars, courses, or conferences which enhance personal development and strengthens the RCL’s information technology framework to support teaching and learning
  • Participates in RCL and University-wide committees and meetings required by supervisor
  • Performs other related duties as required
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, and 2-3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expertise with web application development and programming (HTML, CSS, PHP, and Javascript)
  • Experience integrating web applications with various components and web services
  • Experience with version control; GitHub preferred
  • Experience with Drupal theme and module development preferred
  • Excellent communication skills and technical aptitude
  • Familiarity with library technologies and standards
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups in project planning and development
  • Ability to handle simultaneous projects and clearly articulate how the project tasks are being prioritized
