The Nebraska State Historical Society (NSHS), one of the nation’s most distinguished historical institutions, seeks qualified candidates for the position of Director and Chief Executive Officer. The mission of the NSHS is “to collect, preserve, and open to all the histories we share.”The NSHS, an agency of the State of Nebraska, provides a broad range of historical services to the people of the State. Those include archeology, the State Archives, the Nebraska History Library, historic preservation, seven historic sites, the AAM-accredited Nebraska History Museum, book and periodical publications and the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center. Founded in 1878, the NSHS in the 21st century sparks curiosity about the past and preserves historical resources to foster learning Nebraskans can use to build their futures.
The Director will report to a fifteen-member board of trustees.

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Awareness of how contemporary technologies can be used to preserve and share historical resources and attract new audiences
Astute financial management skills
Superior public and private fundraising skills
The ability and confidence to work with a strong board and staff, donors, government officials and the general public
Effective communicator to serve as the public face of the Nebraska State Historical Society
Strong professional connections
Personal Characteristics:
Integrity, trustworthiness and credibility
Excellent communicator with people at every level
Tactful and diplomatic
Proven success in leadership
A passion for, and understanding of, history with a talent to tell its stories
Professional Qualifications:
Education: Advanced degree preferred in history or a field directly relevant to the responsibilities of Director and CEO and to the mission of the NSHS
Experience: Minimum of five years of successful and progressively responsible experience; relevant executive experience working with a board and leading a staff
