Salary range: $ 42,000 - 50,000

The Metadata and Technical Services Coordinator is responsible for the organization and maintenance of library resources in all formats; supervision of the cataloging and processing of physical materials; and leadership in the content management of digital projects.

Supervise metadata creation and bibliographic control of all library resources (28% )

  • Supervise library staff involved in technical processing (copy cataloging and serials)
  • Adapt bibliographic control functions to the evolving discovery landscape
  • Work with Digital Services Coordinator and the U of M enterprise system management staff to coordinate Briggs practices with ExLibris / Alma structure
  • Perform original cataloging for all formats of library resources
  • Coordinate government document repository status
  • Provide bibliographical control of UMM archives and special collections
  • Lead the cataloging team, ensuring that members stay current on emerging trends in technical services and evolving cataloging software
  • Maintain knowledge about current standards (MARC, Dublin Core, AACR2 and other cataloging standards; LC classification and subject headings, DDC/SuDoc classification systems; learn about RDF and prepare for its implementation at Briggs Library)
  • Supervise formulating and updating Briggs Library cataloging procedures manuals (cataloging, serials and student assistant manuals)


Provide leadership in content management of digital projects (25%)

  • Serve on relevant committees and participate in decision-making for campus digital projects
  • Serve as leader in the implementation of Digital Commons (UMM Digital Well) as the UMM institutional repository; work with members of the campus community to include documents relating to campus governance, works of scholarship and other digital works of relevance and importance to the campus community; work with the vendor as well as U of M technology colleagues in maintaining and updating the repository as necessary
  • Work with the Briggs Library Digital Services Coordinator in maintaining and updating the ContentDM digital image database; supervise scanning and importing digital images in the UMM Digital Collections and work with other campus units in maintaining the quality and accuracy of metadata and technical quality for the images.
  • Monitor trends in metadata issues and inform colleagues about key developments
  • Make recommendations for emerging best practices in digital asset management
  • Apply metadata standards and catalog digital resources
  • Train staff and students on the use of metadata and other aspects of digitization


Provide bibliographic control for UMM Archives ( 20 % )

  • Provide leadership in the organization, processing and maintenance of UMM Archives and selected other special collections (in consultation with the UMM Archivist)
  • Investigate and implement new procedures for organizing and cataloging archival materials
  • Perform original cataloging of UMM Archives and other special collections


Participate in reference and research assistance services ( 15 % )

  • Staff the reference desk and participate in providing reference service to the campus community
  • Select print reference resources for assigned liaison disciplines.


Engage in professional development activities ( 5 % )

  • Participate in campus governance
  • Attend professional meetings and workshops
  • Network with library staff and faculty
  • Read professional literature and attend professional conferences


Participate in library governance ( 4 % )

  • Participate in library planning and policy discussions
  • Attend Library Council and Briggs Staff meetings and participate in discussion
  • Staff circulation desk when necessary
  • Participate in mentoring and supervising library interns
  • Participate in other library initiatives as appropriate and as assigned.


Participate in the library’s liaison program to assigned disciplines ( 3 %)

  • Provide end user instruction
  • Work closely with designated disciplines in promoting library services, collection development, instruction and fostering communication
  • Maintain Lib Guide pages and other resource guides for designated disciplines


Essential knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Degree from an A.L.A. accredited graduate program
  • Knowledge of trends in library metadata creation and maintenance
  • Knowledge and expertise in appropriate cataloging and authority standards
  • Knowledge of metadata schemes and standards
  • Knowledge of the structure and management of online catalogs
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in bibliographic control
  • Knowledge and familiarity with institutional repositories and digital projects
  • Ability to act independently as well as in a collegial and collaborative environment
  • Knowledge of OCLC system
  • Strong service orientation
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to diverse student populations
  • Ability to contribute to the University’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive learning environment
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
sPreferred knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Substantial cataloging experience in multiple formats;
  • Experience with any/all of the following: OCLC, ExLibris systems, ContentDM, open source software and institutional repository platforms
  • Experience and/or coursework in reference service
  • Experience in digital project management
  • Additional graduate degree
  • Reading knowledge of a foreign language;
  • Appreciation and enthusiasm for the liberal arts college experience
