Position Information

The Chapman University Law Library is currently seeking nominations and applications for an energetic and innovative professional to fill the Cataloging and Metadata Assistant position within the Technical Services department. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, technologically savvy, committed to problem-solving, and able to contribute innovative ideas to cataloging and database quality control projects and workflows.

Under the supervision of the Collection Management Librarian, the Cataloging and Metadata Assistant is responsible for copy cataloging and metadata creation for materials in all formats in the law library collection, loading and correcting MARC bibliographic records for e-resource packages, routine bibliographic and authority record maintenance in the ILS, withdrawing materials from the print collection, and keeping cataloging statistics. Additional duties include: shelf-listing, loose-leaf filing, assisting in training and supervising student workers, creating and updating procedural documentation, and working on special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum two years of experience in cataloging/metadata creation.
• Skill in reading, interpreting, and editing MARC bibliographic records.
• Experience working with the staff modules of an integrated library system.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to learn new technologies, tools, processes, and workflows.
• Ability to take direction, follow established procedures and directions, and maintain a positive attitude.
• Ability to think and work in an organized and effective manner in an environment with multiple concurrent projects and tasks.
• Ability to work independently and with others in a collaborative team environment.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with the Innovative Sierra ILS.
• Working knowledge of the AACR2 and RDA cataloging standards.
• Knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings and Classification Web.
• Working knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification system.
• Experience using cataloging tools such as OCLC Connexion.
• Experience understanding and cataloging legal materials.
