Scanning Technician (PT)
Hagley Museum and Library seeks a detail-oriented individual with an interest in digital preservation and access to assist the Audiovisual Collections and Digital Initiatives Department in digitizing a wide variety of archival materials in Hagley’s collections. The Scanning Technician will play a key role in bringing the unfolding history of American enterprise to a wider audience.
Major Responsibilities:
The Scanning Technician is responsible for creating digital surrogates of materials in the Library’s collections.
Specific Duties:
Scan a variety of historic archival documents (manuscripts, publications, visual materials, maps and architectural drawings), following archival standards and best practices, for ingest into Hagley’s digital asset management system.
Fulfill patron reproduction requests in collaboration with the Audiovisual Reference Archivist as well as digitizing materials per the instruction of AVD Department staff.
Prepare documents for scanning, consulting with the Conservation Department on method as necessary.
Ensure quality of master images, inspecting them for clarity, color, completeness, skew, and other parameters as necessary.
Edit images as required.
Name files according to established in-house guidelines.
Create derivative images from master files as requested.
Calibrate and maintain all equipment and procedures involved with digital capture.
Maintain organization and housekeeping of the digitization lab.
Other reference duties as assigned.
Requirements:
A high degree of computer literacy. Excellent attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree from or current enrollment in a library science program or related field. Hands-on experience in digitizing archival materials. Familiarity with archival digitization standards and current best practices. Sensitivity to and experience with handling of archival materials. Expertise in using image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.
This is a temporary position that is funded for 20 hours a week to the end of 2015.
