Departmental Overview
The Library's Engineering and Physical Sciences Division includes five libraries - Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Earth Sciences & Map, Engineering, Mathematics-Statistics, and Physics-Astronomy. These libraries are primary service points and provide research-level print and digital collections to support the research and teaching programs of the College of Engineering, College of Chemistry, and College of Letters & Science's Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division. Researchers throughout the university community and beyond heavily use these libraries. Collectively the staff consists of approximately 5 librarians, 9 career staff, and over 30 student library employees.

Catalog & Metadata Services (C&MS) is responsible for cataloging, metadata maintenance, and physical treatment of all new monographs, serials, and other material types in all physical and digital formats and languages (except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) for the Doe/Moffitt Libraries and Subject Specialty Libraries. Within Catalog & Metadata Services, the Metadata Creation Unit's focus is on the creation of new library metadata and the use or expansion of existing metadata. C&MS works closely with other Library units on projects to improve catalog quality and to identify and create non-MARC metadata for digital library projects.

This position reports to the Head of the Engineering & Physical Sciences Division with a dotted line to the Head of Catalog & Metadata Services.

Responsibilities
Creates and upgrades metadata/catalog records for maps, map sets, atlases, and digital geospatial data for the Earth Sciences & Map Library and other campus libraries. Prepares and assigns metadata to digital map sets and geospatial data for ingestion into digital collections. Performs complex database maintenance by resolving conflicts and improving or correcting bibliographic, item, holdings, and/or authority records in the UCB online catalog, OCLC, and/or other library databases. Selects maps for purchase, storage, or weeding under the direction of the GIS & Map Librarian. Performs bibliographic searching for and submits map orders on behalf of the GIS & Map Librarian. Physically prepares maps, map sets, and atlases for accessioning, storage, or deaccessioning per established procedures and/or trains and directs student employees in this work. Provides reference and instruction services related to the map collection. Performs map scanning for the large format scanning service, interlibrary loan, and digital projects. Creates and maintains relevant documentation. Analyzes, evaluates, interprets and revises or proposes revisions to established guidelines. Represents the Earth Sciences & Map Library on the Cataloging & Metadata Council and participates in Earth Sciences & Map Library, Engineering & Physical Sciences Division, and Catalog & Metadata Services unit meetings.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• Professional proficiency with current cataloging standards, practices, and tools for original and complex copy cataloging such as RDA, MARC21 formats, Library of Congress Classification (particularly classification schedule G), Library of Congress Subject Analysis, Cataloger's Desktop, RDA Toolkit, and other resources of relevance to map and geospatial data cataloging.
• Minimum 1 year experience performing full original cataloging.
• Experience using OCLC Connexion and integrated library systems.
• Demonstrated understanding of cartographic and geospatial resources and concepts through coursework, training, and/or library experience.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member.

Preferred Qualifications

• One or more years of experience cataloging maps and geospatial resources.
• One or more years of experience with selection and collection development.
• Experience with the Millennium integrated library system.
• Experience working with existing and emerging metadata standards such as MODS, Dublin Core, METS, XML, and FGDC and/or ISO standards for GIS data.
• Experience assisting patrons with navigating library resources through reference and instruction.
• Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
• Demonstrated understanding of digital project workflows.
