Description
: With a mission to engage the community, provide innovative library services and foster lifelong learning, the MCFL serves the unincorporated areas of Marin County, as well as the cities and towns of Novato, Corte Madera, Fairfax, Marin City, and Ross. Along with a dedicated share of a stable local property tax, the MCFL enjoys broad community support as shown by the passage of a supplemental parcel tax by more than 78%. Through the activities of the County’s ten-branch library system, the MCFL offers an expansive collection; digital content; public access computers; free Wi-Fi; AV and print resources; special programming for children, teens and seniors; literacy programs serving both families and individuals; and study space for students of all ages.MARINet is a consortium of MCFL, six other public libraries and two university libraries in Marin County, all of whom share a catalog and automation system. The MARINet office runs and maintains an Integrated Library System for consortium members, providing training, technical support and web catalog maintenance to the member libraries. Patrons’ library cards are valid at any MARINet library and, with certain exceptions, items can be borrowed from any MARINet library and returned to any MARINet library.
THE POSITION: The Systems Librarian is responsible for administering the day to day operations of MARINet and for the provision of core services by all Marin County consortium libraries who share a single library catalog. This position provides training to library staff on the ILS software and catalog, creates and maintains documentation and manuals for staff, and performs design and coding work for the web catalog’s interfaces. The Systems Librarian also works closely with various MARINet committees and helps to select databases and related products for use by all members of the consortium.

They will have experience supporting ILS software, either with Sierra, or with a comparable integrated library system. He or she will also have experience with web catalog configuration and support, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with staff and vendors. In addition, the ideal candidate should have an interest in learning new technologies, and with optimizing the user experience for people using our web catalog. MARINet staff is continuously moving between troubleshooting/maintenance, and projects to improve or implement new features in our systems, so the ideal candidate will be comfortable with that type of work, and able to be very hands-on with designing and coding our library interfaces. The ideal candidate will have an awareness of library trends, familiarity with vendors of library technology products and the ability to work independently on project implementations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Equivalent to an American Library Association-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science, Library and Information Services, or similar curriculum and three years of experience as a professional librarian. Overall work experience must include two years of supervisory experience which may have been obtained in a position other than professional librarian. Experience using current technology in the primary area to which assigned is required. Experience in a public library setting is highly desirable.
TENTATIVE EXAM SCHEDULE: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination process may consist of a highly qualified review, supplemental application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates’ names will be placed on the eligible list. In the event that additional testing is not conducted, applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be notified to contact the department in the order their applications are received by the Human Resources Department.
