The University of Georgia Libraries seeks a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Librarian who will be responsible for developing and promoting GIS services throughout the UGA Libraries, overseeing the daily operations of the Map and Government Information Library’s GIS Lab, and participating in projects to make maps and other geospatial information from the collection available online. This position reports to the Head of the Map and Government Information Library.The UGA Libraries is the designated Regional Federal Depository Library for the State of Georgia and the official depository for Georgia state government publications; it is also home to one of the largest academic map collections in the country. Taken together, the map and government documents collections consist of approximately 1.6 million paper items and over 3 million microforms. The UGA Libraries is located on the university's main campus in Athens, Georgia, and its facilities include the Main Library, Science Library, Zell B. Miller Learning Center, Map and Government Information Library, Repository and Special Collections Libraries. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Provides instruction and research assistance in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial information in all subjects and disciplines.
*Oversees the daily operations of the Map and Government Information Library’s GIS Lab.
*Develops and maintains GIS-related LibGuides, FAQs and tutorials.
*Develops and maintains the Map and Government Information Library's geospatial data collection, including open-access online datasets and commercial products.
*Provides GIS support for the UGA Libraries Digital Humanities Lab.
*Works collaboratively with Map and Government Information Library, Digital Library of Georgia, and other UGA Libraries staff members and departments to make maps and other geospatial information from the collection available online.
*Assists patrons in the use of Map and Government Information Library resources during regular reference desk shifts by answering questions in person, by email and by phone, locating requested materials and resources, and assisting patrons with scanning, printing and photocopying.
Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via the Libraries listserv, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings, and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
Contributes to the mission of the Map and Government Information Library and the Libraries as a whole by actively participating in the development and evaluation of departmental policies and services, and serving on appropriate Libraries' committees as elected or assigned.
Contributes to the achievement of Libraries-wide goals by maintaining effective working relationships.
Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the department and organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
ALA-accredited MLIS; Two years of GIS-related work experience or coursework; Experience with geospatial data formats and GIS software including ESRI ArcGIS, open-source, and web-based GIS tools; Knowledge of geospatial data sources and data curation; Knowledge of geospatial database design and geospatial metadata; Effective verbal and written communication skills; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students and colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications:
GIS certificate, degree or advanced degree in GIS preferred; Experience with the use and instruction of GIS in an academic library environment preferred; Experience with tangible cartographic resource collections preferred; Experience with digitization projects, particularly map digitization projects preferred; Familiarity with ArcGIS Server and web mapping services preferred; Experience with a programing language such as Python or PHP preferred.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Minimum salary is $39,500. UGA librarians are non-tenured faculty members. UGA offers an attractive benefits program including a choice of health and retirement plans, dental plan, tuition remission and paid relocation, 21 days annual leave, 12 days sick leave, and 12 paid holidays.
