Description

The George Mason University Libraries seeks a Metadata & Cataloging Librarian. Under the direction of the Head of Resource Description & Metadata Services, this position implements and supports metadata strategies associated with digital initiatives and projects. The successful candidate will serve as the primary resource for non-MARC metadata and designs and provides documentation, training and consultation on creation and application of metadata for the University Libraries.

Duties include: establishing procedures for creation and maintenance of metadata for digital and nontraditional library collections; working with other library departments to establish procedures for metadata creation; performing quality control on metadata for digital collections; transforming metadata for ingest into our institutional repository and digital collections platform; maintaining knowledge of current description standards such as RDA, FRBR/FRAD and emerging trends and practices such Linked Data/BIBFRAME/Schema.org; guiding and training library staff in adoption of these trends; serving on library committees and teams as assigned; and managing student assistants. As a member of the RDMS department, the successful candidate is also expected to catalog media using traditional rules (RDA, LCSH, LCC, MARC21) and may also work with the Information Analyst for Technical Services to prepare record sets for ingest.

Required Qualifications:
  • An ALA-accredited MLS/MIS/MLIS, or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent degree
  • Demonstrated experience with non-MARC metadata (Dublin Core, MODS, EAD, etc.)
  • Experience with XML, XSLT, and/or other tools or macros for large-scale editing/transforming of metadata
  • Experience with an XML editor such as Oxygen
  • Familiarity with authority work
  • An understanding of controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and ontologies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to problem solving and working across organizational boundaries
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with an attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a congenial team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years professional level experience
  • Experience with MARC21, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LCC
  • An awareness of cataloging issues and trends, especially Linked Data, BIBFRAME, and Schema.org
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and content management systems
  • Supervisory experience
  • Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language
