Assistant Director Network Architecture

Description

The Assistant Director, Network Architecture is responsible for the architectural design of Bucknell University's data network infrastructure; for ensuring the overall health and performance of the campus network; for providing leadership and direction to members of the Networking team; and for supplying technical guidance in all networking matters. The Assistant Director is also responsible for fostering an environment within the Networking team where collaboration, coaching, an enthusiasm for learning, and a desire to continuously improve services and infrastructure flourishes. The Assistant Director delegates tasks, sets policies and priorities, assigns deadlines, and manages workflows for the Networking team. The Assistant Director represents the Networking team and is ultimately responsible for the team's performance. We seek a candidate with demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

The Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Chief Technology Officer (Assistant CTO) and works collaboratively and willingly with other Assistant and Associate Directors reporting to the Assistant CTO, as well as with other leaders and staff of Library and Information Technology to offer or take advantage of expertise, investigate opportunities for further integration, improve existing services, or offer new services.



The Network:
Bucknell's campus network is highly redundant and resilient, supporting data, voice-over-IP telephony, IP-multicast television, and pervasive 802.11n/ac wireless connectivity. The network plays a vital role in campus recoverability from a disaster to either of Bucknell's two on-campus data centers, as well as taking a significant part in securing campus resources against malware and attack. The campus network extends into areas of downtown Lewisburg and other off-campus locations via leased fiber or VPN tunnels. Commodity Internet service is provided to the campus by redundant, diverse, high-speed circuits. 

Job Requirements

--A Bachelor's degree or significant relevant experience.

--At least four years of progressive responsibility, supervisory or otherwise.

--At least three years' experience in designing, installing, and supporting wired enterprise networks.

--Expertise in designing, configuring, deploying, and troubleshooting enterprise 802.11 wireless networks, to include 802.11n and later standards.

--Comprehensive knowledge of and familiarity with common layer 2 and 3 protocols, including IPv6.

--Comprehensive knowledge of and familiarity with routing theory and protocols, particularly but not limited to BGP4, OSPF, and Cisco EIGRP.

--Expertise in the configuration and proper placement of network firewalls.

--Demonstrated experience in information security policies and practices.

--Expertise with Cisco software and hardware in a routing and switching environment.

--Ability to configure and troubleshoot connectivity issues, wired or wireless, on a wide range of client platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android.



--Experience with converged networks and quality-of-service, including voice- and video-over-IP.

--Enthusiasm for learning new software tools, operating systems, and networking applications.

--Demonstrated experience in creative problem solving, both alone and collaboratively.

--A well-developed sense of organization.

--A strong interest in the application of emerging technological standards and providing functional, high quality services.

--Familiarity with the physical aspects of installing and maintaining a network, including: various sorts of racks, cable trays, cabinets, and other paraphernalia associated with the installation of a network; cable punch-down, termination, and routing; pulling of fiber and cables through conduit and duct banks.

--The ability to work closely and amicably with a wide range of individuals including students, faculty, administrators, and support staff who possess a broad variety of technical skills.

--Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

--Administrative experience with Unix-like, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems.

--The ability to write simple scripts for task automation.



--A self-starter with the ability to fulfill a variety of functions without direct supervision.
