University Librarian, York University

York University seeks applications and nominations for the role of University Librarian.

Established in 1959 and now the third largest university in Canada, York University is home to 7,000 faculty and staff who empower a community of 55,000 students. The University, renowned for academic excellence, is recognized for its commitment to collegial self-governance, social justice, access, and diversity. York University Libraries is an innovative and diverse learning organization, one that is central to the York University community and one in which dynamic intellectual exchange is fostered and welcomed.

Guided by the Libraries’ strategic plan, New Horizons for the Digital Age 2012–2015, the University Librarian will provide strategic direction to the Libraries’ portfolio, and oversee the administration, budget, planning, and policy development for seven libraries, in four buildings, on two campuses.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the successful candidate will have excelled in academic leadership at the senior levels, and will draw on that experience as a proven leader to implement transformational service delivery. A strong administrator with broad scholarly knowledge, the new University Librarian will embrace digital learning and emerging technologies, and will be committed to excellence in the provision of library services and collections that meet the needs of today’s students and academic community. As a highly developed relationship builder, with a commitment to diversity, the University Librarian will forge collaborative working relationships with staff, faculty, students and external groups. A MLIS, MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited Library School, or a Ph.D. in library and information science or equivalent degree is required. This will be an appointment with tenure; rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

York University is an Affirmative Action (AA) employer and strongly values diversity, including gender and sexual diversity, within its community. The AA Program, which applies to Aboriginal people, visible minorities, people with disabilities, and women, can be found at www.yorku.ca/acadjobs or by calling the AA office at 416-736-5713. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents will be given priority.

Consideration of candidates will begin September 2014. The appointment, to be effective as early as January 1, 2015 , has a five-year term, renewable on review. Inquiries and/or applications should be directed to Gerri Woodford or Amanda Bugatto at yorkulib@odgersberndtson.ca.
