Based near Okehampton in Devon, the North Wyke site has a focus on grassland systems within Rothamsted Research which is the UK’s primary institute for agricultural sciences sponsored by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The North Wyke Farm Platform is a new BBSRC-funded National Capability which provides centralised scientific facilities including core data (field and water chemistry, water flow rates, greenhouse gas emissions from soils, livestock and agronomic data and farm management records). Much of this core data will be spatially and/or temporally referenced.

  • Linking the multiple databases that comprise this data
  • Writing queries to create views and/or reports on this data
  • Making snapshots of the linked data available online
  • Converting the linked data to a format recognised by an existent archive database
The successful candidate will have:
  • A degree in Computer Science (or equivalent)
  • Strong database/data analysis and programming skills
  • Strong SQL Server skills - able to extract, manipulate, import and export data
  • Expert user of desktop analysis tools including MS Excel
  • Proven experience of analysing, investigating and reporting large amounts of data
  • An eye for detail and a commitment to accuracy and data integrity
  • An aptitude to learn (or develop existing) skills, for example those required for spatial/temporal database management and the web-based visualisation of such data (i.e. skills required for a web-based Geographical Information System - GIS)
