Digital Collections and Metadata Lead

The Digital Assets and Preservation Services (DAPS) team at Mount Holyoke College is looking for a service-oriented and tech-savvy professional to join us in developing outstanding scholarly, archival, artistic, and curricular digital collections.

DAPS, an active unit of Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS), supports the creation, access management, and preservation of unique digital materials. If you: have a passion for developing and preserving digital collections; have demonstrated experience in digital repository management, XML, and metadata cross-walking; are an enthusiastic and fearless user of technology with the skills and curiosity to learn more; are committed to working collaboratively within a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students; and are comfortable overseeing multiple projects and deadlines, then we encourage you to apply.

Responsibilities: Manage our digital repository and digital asset management systems (currently CONTENTdm and DSpace, but we anticipate moving to a Fedora-based system), including description, ingest, publishing, and QC; develop/maintain policies and best practices concerning metadata and preservation; act as principal liaison to Archives and Special Collections department in support of archival digital collections development and metadata (including electronic records); support Head of DAPS in overseeing daily workflows of the department; and collaborate effectively with LITS departments and the MHC community in developing new digital collections.

Qualifications: MLS or related advanced degree preferred, but we welcome and will consider otherwise qualified candidates with credentials and experience to support the requirements of the position. Recent Master’s graduates with relevant experience are welcome to apply. One-three years of experience, preferably in an academic or archival setting. Demonstrated experience in digital repository systems. Experience with, or training in, an archives environment is highly desired. Demonstrated proficiency with XML. Experience in metadata cross-walking to include XSLT and/or other scripting methods. Experience with standards-based non-MARC metadata schemas such as Qualified Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and EAD. Knowledge of digital object creation and preservation standards including PREMIS. Will be expected to learn new and relevant technologies on an ongoing basis. Must be comfortable overseeing multiple projects and deadlines at once. Familiarity with database manipulation, structured query language (SQL), and shell/command line usage is an asset. Flexibility, creativity, and a sense of humor is essential.
