The Hennepin County Library (HCL) system, nationally recognized as one of the top libraries in the United States, serves more than one million residents of the city of Minneapolis and suburban Hennepin County. The library system offers more than 5 million books, CDs and DVDs, materials in more than 40 languages, 1800 public computers and extensive websites.

HCL is seeking a Principal Web Developer to lead and direct work on web and mobile application development as part of a team in the System and Online Services Department based at the Minneapolis Central Library. This position will participate in the work to plan, design, create, update, expand, maintain and develop the Library's current and future web and mobile applications.



Primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Lead and direct work to build and integrate interactive and static websites, mobile applications, and services for internal and external audiences
  • Work with a team of programmers, content managers, and content providers on large and complex projects
  • Develop and adhere to all applicable web, development and security standards
  • Evaluate new software; test on various platforms, browsers and applications
  • Code, test troubleshoot and debug applications
  • Work with vendors that provide key products and services to develop and maintain web interfaces
  • Participate on development teams and serve as a technical expert on multi-tier application development teams
  • Provide technical assistance and project work direction to information technology staff assigned to projects
  • Prepare written proposals and project objectives and documentation


Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, management information systems (MIS) or an approved related field plus two years of professional information technology experience
    • A two year college/vocational technical degree in computer science, management information systems (MIS) or approved certification in an IT program and four years of professional level IT experience
    • An approved equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three years of web development experience within the last five years
  • Experience in developing and supporting web and mobile software applications
  • Expert-level experience with web and mobile application development fundamentals (Sitecore, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, ASP.NET)
  • Experience with modern, high-level programming languages (e.g. PHP, Ruby, Java, Perl, C#)
  • Demonstrated experience with source code management
  • Knowledge of application design, development, testing, debugging, implementation, support and maintenance
  • Ability to plan and deliver training and provide assistance to department users
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to quickly analyze application and network problems
