Description

The Revs Institute for Automotive Research in Naples, Florida is in search of a Metadata Specialist for a large scale digitization project of historic images, and documents. The Revs Institute’s library and archives contain well over one million original research documents and over 20,000 monographs.  The applicant must have experience working with a large metadata project and demonstrate excellent overall computer and research skills, along with a proficiency in Excel spreadsheets. Currently Revs is working in association with Stanford University Libraries on a large scale photo digitization project, international in scope.

Duties:
  • Develop and maintain a subject ontology to be used as index terms for Revs, including working with new sets of materials that are added to the Revs Library to expand the ontology to include new areas of coverage and to develop a translation of imported metadata to the Revs metadata schema.
  • Supervise the assignment of those terms to catalog records created by Revs staff, in an automated and manual way.
  • Work with Stanford Libraries to ensure the accuracy of the migration of Revs metadata to the Revs Digital Library.
  • Promote Revs ontologies for use in linked data applications.
  • Correct complex errors in various types of records that enhance discoverability of library resources in our online catalog (e.g. bibliographic records, call number records, item records, holdings records).
  • Determine subject content of books in different languages and assign Library of Congress call number and subject keywords.
  • Create abbreviated level bibliographic records according to local policies and guidelines, including deriving a record from copy.
  • Perform “enhanced” copy cataloging (e.g. adding a call number to resources that lack classification).
  • Review, add, and modify metadata for digital collections by examining the digital objects and applying guidelines specific to the collection.
Requirements:
  • Experience as a cataloger or classes in cataloging or metadata (Library Specialist 3 is welcome to apply).
  • Experience in developing or assigning metadata to one or more specialized collections.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets and communication software such as email.
  • Experience using or ability to learn one or more library automated systems, proficiency in using SirsiDynix's Symphony preferred.??
  • Excellent analytic and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, production-oriented environment and the ability to adapt quickly and work under pressure to meet deadlines and production goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity.
  • Good keyboarding skills and physical tolerance for at least six hours per day of keying.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, under pressure, in a highly demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to process materials in a wide variety of foreign languages and subjects.
  • Ability to determine basic subject matter of materials and input appropriate subject keywords in English.
  • Thorough knowledge of catalog records and MARC21 formats, with the ability to effectively search bibliographic utilities (e.g. OCLC)
  • Ability to work with a variety of non-MARC metadata formats.
  • Ability to work with a variety of digitized physical formats (e.g., images, maps) and languages.
  • Ability to follow and apply the content rules for creating metadata records as specified for individual projects.
  • Ability to locate class numbers corresponding to the main subject using LC's Classification Web database and, as necessary, bibliographic databases.
  • Ability to complete call numbers by assigning appropriate cutter numbers, based on instructions in classification schedules and using LC cutter tables, as well as pre-established cutter numbers, and shelf lists against the SUL Union Catalog.
  • Perform copy cataloging as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience: Completion of high school and four years of library experience; or an Associate Degree in library technology from a two-year technical school or community college and two years of library experience; or a Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Desired Education and Experience: Four-year college degree.  Advanced coursework in library science, history, or related field. Post-undergraduate paid library work experience, preferably in Technical Services, Special Collections, or Digital Collections.
