The Sr. Software Engineer is responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of various departmental and enterprise-wide application systems. Functions as technical lead for the Software Development and Support team in the Digital Systems and Services (DSS) Department of Welch Medical Library.

The Sr. Software Engineer reports to the Director of the Digital Systems and Software and is a member of the DSS department. He/she mentors and provides leadership to the other members of the software team. He/she is responsible for all software, web services, web sites, mobile and desktop applications provided by the Welch Medical Library. These applications serve the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, as well as the JH Hospital System.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide leadership for software development and support team. Mentor software engineers and web developer. Establish iterative methodologies and practices for software development. Develop software and services, by executing all cycles of the software development life cycle including requirements gathering, use case development, technical specifications, feasibility, prototype development, documentation, implemented production systems, and maintenance. Evaluate technical architectures and platforms, and advise library leadership on technology tr and solutions. Gather highly complex system requirements by meeting with clients and researching existing technology to understand the business requirements and possible solutions for new applicatio Develop detailed tasks and project plans by analyzing project scope and milestones for highly complex projects. Construct content models for data. Implement and maintain code repository. Evaluate quality of others’ work, including code. Develop the more complex systems and implement the more complex requirements that we encounter as a team.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Six years of related work experience with computer systems and applications required. Experience with modern software development tools and practices. Must have demonstrated team leadership experience.

Must demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and analytical reasoning skills. Excellent, clear and concise verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to converse fluently with technical and non-technical people.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree preferred. Experience working in higher education, medical libraries, or medical institutions. Familiarity with researcher identifiers, identity management, data management, data visualization, data repositories. Demonstrated experience working in an iterative or agile environment.
