Description

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director for Collection Services, the Head of Metadata Services is responsible for managing all metadata needs at the D'Angelo Law Library, ensuring the creation and maintenance of metadata, resource access, and discovery of library resources in all languages and in all formats. The Head of Metadata Services also manages the processes to create and maintain material in the Law School’s institutional repository, Chicago Unbound. The Head of Metadata Services supervises the work of one librarian, two full-time metadata assistants, and any needed student employees.

 

The Head of Metadata Services coordinates D’Angelo cataloging policies and procedures to comply with processes at the University Library in our shared library system environment and communicates unique and special needs for the description of legal materials and the discovery needs of D’Angelo and the Law School community.

 

The D'Angelo Law Library contributes to the academic and scholarly success of the University of Chicago and Law School communities by providing rich collections and resources, maintaining a premier scholarly environment, and delivering superior library services. D'Angelo's collections are among the world's finest for law research and enable comprehensive access to legal scholarship and interdisciplinary resources. D'Angelo occupies five floors in the central tower of the Law School's Laird Bell Quadrangle and is a valued partner in the Law School's community of scholarship, teaching, and learning. The D'Angelo Law Library is part of the University of Chicago Library system, working cooperatively with other campus libraries to ensure rapid access to print and digital collections, research and study spaces, and expansive services. D'Angelo team members foster and maintain a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive workplace culture to provide the highest level of service to the prolific and evolving University of Chicago Law School and University communities.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the work of the Metadata Section. Organizes, distributes, and monitors workflows to ensure optimum efficiency of operations.
  • Supervises one librarian, two metadata assistants, and student assistant workers. Ensures proper evaluation and training of staff.
  • Collaborating with the Associate Director for Collection Services, engages in goal setting, establishes priorities, and manages projects to achieve established goals.
  • Reviews original and copy cataloging work for quality; performs original cataloging and classification work.
  • Manages the work to create and maintain Law School material in its institutional repository, Chicago Unbound.
  • Oversees serial receiving work at D’Angelo.
  • Compiles, summarizes, and analyzes statistics of the metadata section for internal and external reporting.
  • Identifies and assists with the resolution of complex problems in D’Angelo Collection Services.
  • Assists with electronic resource maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Participates in the testing, evaluation, training, and implementation of the Library System Platform, FOLIO.
  • Stays current on metadata standards and best practices relevant to metadata services at law school libraries, and shares this knowledge with colleagues at D’Angelo and the University Library.
  • Develops and maintains collegial and collaborative relationships with colleagues at D’Angelo, the Law School, and the University Library.
  • Serves on D’Angelo and University Library committees and groups, as well as professional organizations at national, regional, and local level.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited library school or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and advanced degree.
  • Three years minimum of progressively responsible experience with metadata work in an academic library.
  • Experience with current national cataloging/metadata standards, including MARC formats, subject analysis and classification systems.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience, including hiring, training, evaluation, and performance management.

 

Preferred:

  • Relevant experience with legal materials
  • Experience with cataloging in OCLC, including authority work
  • Experience and/or knowledge of institutional repositories
  • Experience with digital projects in a library environment
  • Successful project management experience
  • Experience documenting processes and providing training
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Problem-solving and leadership skills
  •  Knowledge of at least one foreign Western European language
