The Lupton Library seeks an energetic, intellectually curious, and user-centered professional to fill our Digital Integration Librarian position in the Materials Processing Department at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (UTC). The librarian in this position serves as an integral member of a team of faculty librarians and staff specialists committed to managing ongoing, seamless access to electronic and serialized resources in all formats efficiently and effectively. This is an ideal opportunity for a professional interested in working in a small academic library focused on providing proactive services in a dynamic, transparent, and flexible environment.
Reporting to the Head of Materials Processing, the Digital Integration Librarian implements public facing digital tools and services that connect electronic and other library resources for patrons. The Digital Integration Librarian leads the development of new methods of resource delivery that connect the UTC community members to information resources.
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Implement innovative services that ensure the discovery of library resources in all formats, with an emphasis on digital resources;
Promote and improve resource access by updating, customizing, and integrating interfaces for e- resource discovery, including vendor platforms for databases/e-journals/e-books, and other library resources;
Manage proxy access to library holdings and assist in managing workflows associated with access;
Gather, analyze, and report statistics on e-resources and services usage;
Work closely with the Library Information Technology Department on the development and implementation of electronic services;
Work closely with Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian to optimize content exposure;
Resolve problems relating to e-resources access in a timely manner;
Monitor trends in e-resource discovery, analyze tools and workflows, explore new models and recommend changes to existing tools and workflows as appropriate;
Provide information, training, and support to inform colleagues at the Lupton Library and the campus of new features and interface changes related to e-resource discovery;
Manage student workers and delegate workflows effectively; Assist and advise department head and dean in the iterative reorganization of the department and the library.
Overall librarian responsibilities include:
Provide reference services for 2 to 3 hours per week and one Saturday per semester;
Serve as Library liaison to assigned academic departments and develop collections in the corresponding subject areas;
Serve on Library committees and participate in other Library-wide efforts;
Serve on University committees and participate in other University-wide efforts;
Participate in professional, scholarly, and creative endeavors.
The Materials Processing Department provides UTC students, faculty, staff, and affiliates with access to a range of resources in a variety of formats, from discovery to fulfillment. The department consists of 4 full-time librarians, 3 full-time staff specialists, and student assistants working in a collaborative environment committed to excellence.
The Lupton Library is centrally located at the heart of the UTC campus. The Library staff is comprised of 16 librarians and 14 staff members, has an annual budget of just over 2.4 million dollars, and collection holdings of more than 500,000 volumes, over 2,000 active journal subscriptions, 140 databases, and over 22,000 accessible online journals. The Lupton Library offers 100 public computers, 10 group study rooms, and two well-equipped library instruction classrooms, among other features.
Lupton Library faculty and staff support and enhance the campus community's mission of teaching, research, and service by providing a comprehensive range of public, collections, and technological services, including proactive outreach, instruction, and reference. Lupton Library constitutes the largest information center on campus. The Library's technological infrastructure consists of a combination of vendor-based, open source, and locally developed resources. Key components include: VTLS Virtua's ILS, OCLC's Web-scale Management System (WMS), Gold Rush's open-url linking software, ILLiad, Rapid ILL, electronic reserves, LibGuides, LibraryH3lp, a Joomla-based web presence, and a number of in- house programs that manage and enhance library collection and services.
Current and recently completed projects include an ongoing review of the circulating collection of books, implementation of OCLC's WMS, implementation of a new zombie-themed library orientation game, expanded workshop offerings, implementation of digital signage and 10 new Macs on the public floor, an experimental library news channel, and an upcoming website redesign. The library is in the building phase of a new $48 million dollar, 180,000 square foot library to be completed in early 2013.

Located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, UTC is a growing metropolitan university of just over 10,000 students offering 44 undergraduate degree programs, 22 graduate degree programs, and doctorates in three fields. In 2008 UTC earned the Community Engagement designation from the Carnegie Foundation in the areas of Curricular Engagement and Outreach/Partnerships. The campus is in year three of its five year Strategic Plan.
UTC's 100 acre campus is located in walking distance from downtown Chattanooga in the center of a very scenic metropolitan area of close to 500,000 people. Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program;
Detailed understanding of current models, practices, and tools used by academic libraries for e- resources discovery, such as link resolving, federated searching, digital repositories, and digitization efforts;
Demonstrated aptitude and experience with relevant information technology, such as integrated library systems, open-url resolver, Microsoft Office, Web 2.0 and social software (blogs, wikis, RSS), and instant messaging;
Demonstrated problem solving, organizational and analytical skills, and an aptitude for detail- oriented work;
Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, and implement effective programs, projects, and services;
Demonstrated strong commitment to customer service excellence;
Proven communication and interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, students, and staff;
Demonstrated ability to be flexible in a dynamic work environment;
Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex changing environment and complete tasks according to an established timeframe;
Demonstrated ability to view issues from an institutional and Library-wide perspective and to support organizational change;
Commitment to conduct research and scholarship consistent with a faculty appointment;
Commitment to engage in continuing professional development.
A second advanced degree;
Prior experience implementing digital services in a library setting;
Prior academic library experience;
Knowledge of current issues and trends in scholarly communication;
Working knowledge of operating systems (Linux/Unix, Windows, Mac) and database technologies (MySQL), and structured data ( XML, JSON);
Minimum is $42,500.00, commensurate with experience.
This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with faculty status and academic rank. Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor. Professional achievement, service, and research/scholarship activity are required for tenure and promotion.
