Reporting to the UCSF Archivist, the Assistant Archivist is responsible for preparation, organization and processing of archives, manuscripts, and audio-visual collections. The incumbent accessions, appraises, and inventories newly acquired materials, performs basic preservation tasks; participates in records management activities for university records, including electronic records; provides reference services to members of the UCSF community and other researchers, manages reproduction requests, and participates in digitization program; assists in alumni and donor-related activities, supports Archives outreach program. The incumbent will also perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS with a major in History or a related field and one year of experience in administrative analysis or operations research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; demonstrated command of archival theory and practice; working knowledge of current metadata and descriptive standards, including DACS and EAD; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to work independently as well as in a team with diverse population and in a rapidly changing environment; demonstrated ability to maintain and safeguard confidentiality of documents and information collected and reviewed; 1-2 years of experience working in archives creating finding aids, evaluating materials for historical value, describing, arranging and preserving materials; experience providing reference services in an archives or manuscripts repository; experience working with Archivists' Toolkit and/or other collection management systems. Physical demands: sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, waist twisting, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching shoulder height and below, lifting up to 40 lbs. overhead, above and below waist, carrying up to 60 lbs., pushing/pulling over 60 lbs., fine finger manipulation, gross manipulation, simple and power grasp, repetitive hand/arm use, ability to tolerate loud noise, dust, latex, ability to differentiate color, use of protective equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or Master's degree in archival studies, history, museum studies or related discipline; a concentration or certification in archival studies; experience working with MARC records and digital content management systems, such as Omeka.
